Description

The Congress of the People was held in Kliptown in June 1955 to adopt the Freedom Charter. The Freedom Charter called for equal rights for all South Africans, regardless of race. It also spoke to democracy and human rights, land reform, labour rights, and nationalisation. Many of the texts included in the new South African Constitution are based on demands made in the Freedom Charter.

This cartoon drawing shows Chief Luthuli kicking a football to Nelson Mandela. The football is symbolic of the Freedom Charter..
